In my landscape paintings I am using colour to express my response to what I see. The harmonious and dissonant combinations are arranged to give overall balance that conveys the sense of place, not as a fleeting moment, but with stability over time. Recently I have been exploring the fusion of landscape with abstraction to develop ways to express other aspects of the world around us so that my paintings challenge how we look at landscape and question the idea that what we see is all that there is and so I seek to express the juxtaposition of the physical with the spiritual.

a painting of Mars showing its geology

'Mars-ish, Geological-ish, Maidstone-ish'

762 x 762 mm, acrylic on canvas

This painting explores Mars in colour and texture. ‘Space’ around the planet is lightly textured to indicate possible ‘dark matter’ that cannot be seen but in the future may be detected and hence ‘felt’, it also represents the near vacuum that is space (Earth’s outer space being at 10^-6 torr). The part of Mars in shadow reveals the many craters just glimpsed at the boundary of light and dark. The illuminated surface of Mars is peeled back to reveal the underlying geology using colours based on geological maps of Mars, somewhat simplified and with colour changes. At about ’10.30’ on the edge of the Argyre Basin (the green and blue ring near the South Pole) is a tiny red dot indicating the location of the crater named ‘Maidstone’ (click on word to see enlarged image).
